Description
A soul-warming, rustic American dessert featuring tender, spiced apples nestled beneath a golden, biscuit-like topping. This traditional treat is defined by its unpretentious charm, where the dough is partially submerged into the fruit to absorb syrupy, caramelized flavors. Perfect for a cozy evening, this recipe relies on pantry staples to create a nostalgic, comforting dish that feels like a warm embrace.
Ingredients
6 large firm baking apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar for dusting
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, then spread into a baking dish.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the milk until just combined to form a soft dough.
Drop spoonfuls of the dough over the apples.
Using a spatula or spoon, gently push or ‘dowdy’ the dough into the fruit, allowing some of the juice to bubble up around the edges.
Bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
Let cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheat in the oven to maintain the texture of the crust.
