Description

These German chocolate brownies combine a rich, fudgy, cocoa-intense brownie base with a decadent, gooey coconut-pecan custard topping. It is the perfect marriage of a classic cake flavor profile in a portable, handheld bar. High-quality ingredients like dark chocolate and freshly toasted pecans create a sophisticated indulgence that is both comforting and nostalgic, offering a touch of celebratory flair to any casual gathering or slow Sunday afternoon at home.

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 cups granulated sugar
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup granulated sugar
3 large egg yolks
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
1 cup pecans, toasted and chopped

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter and 2 cups sugar.
Beat in the 4 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth.
Fold in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
While the brownies bake, combine evaporated milk, 1 cup sugar, and 3 egg yolks in a saucepan over medium heat.
Cook the topping mixture, stirring constantly, until it thickens into a custard, about 10 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in the 1/2 cup butter, vanilla, coconut, and toasted pecans.
Spread the warm topping evenly over the brownies immediately after taking them out of the oven.
Let the brownies cool completely before slicing into squares.

Notes

Ensure the pecans are toasted before adding to the topping to ensure the deepest flavor profile. Store these brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days for optimal freshness.
