Description

Indulge in these comforting sweet potato cinnamon rolls, where earthy mashed sweet potatoes meet the warmth of cinnamon. This yeast-based dough is exceptionally tender and stays moist, rolled with a fragrant spiced sugar filling and crowned with a luxurious, tangy brown butter cream cheese glaze. Perfect for a cozy weekend morning, these rolls offer a sophisticated yet nostalgic treat that brings everyone together around the kitchen table.

Ingredients

Scale

2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp granulated sugar
1/4 cup warm water
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup mashed sweet potato, cooled
1/2 cup warm whole milk
1/3 cup melted butter
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
1 egg, room temperature
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, softened (for filling)
4 oz cream cheese, softened
2 tbsp browned butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Dissolve yeast and 1 tsp sugar in warm water; let sit until foamy.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
Mix in the sweet potato, milk, melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture until a dough forms.
Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
Roll dough into a large rectangle and spread with softened butter.
Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and cinnamon; roll into a log and slice into 12 rolls.
Arrange rolls in a greased pan, cover, and proof for 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350°F and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden.
Whisk cream cheese, browned butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth; spread over warm rolls.

Notes

Ensure the sweet potato is completely smooth and cooled before adding to the dough to prevent killing the yeast. To brown butter for the glaze, heat in a small saucepan over medium until amber and nutty, then cool slightly. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
